the prompt and the process

My prompt for this postmodern devising project was simply the word “box”. From this prompt I was given complete liberty for a 15 minute piece.

I began by creating a list of everything that came to mind from the prompt over one week, and from there casted six actors and presented my ideas to them. Because postmodern theater is non-linear, over the first two weeks of rehearsal I split the actors into groups and gave them liberty to create movement inspired by various ideas from the aforementioned list. After showing me their initial ideas, I would craft together scenes that, once finished, I recorded and held onto. The next two weeks were spent finding through lines in what we had created, revealing what themes were recurring and focused on those. Our last week was spent in tech, adding in all the design elements.
